Classic Salisbury steak is a hearty dish made with ground beef patties simmered in a rich onion and mushroom gravy. It’s comfort food at its best — simple, satisfying, and full of flavor.

Perfect for a cozy family dinner, especially when served over mashed potatoes or rice.

Ingredients

▪️ For the patties:

  • 1 lb (500 g) ground beef
  • ¼ cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ¼ tsp black pepper
  • 1 tbsp finely chopped onion (or onion powder)

▪️ For the gravy:

  • 2 tbsp butter or oil
  • 1 large onion, sliced
  • 1 cup sliced mushrooms
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

1. Make the patties:

  1. In a bowl, combine ground beef, egg, breadcrumbs, Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper, and onion.
  2. Shape into 4–5 oval patties.

2. Cook the patties:

  1. Heat oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
  2. Sear the patties for about 4–5 minutes per side, until browned. Remove and set aside.

3. Prepare the gravy:

  1. In the same skillet, sauté onions for 5 minutes.
  2. Add mushrooms and cook for another 3–4 minutes.
  3. Stir in the flour and cook for 1 minute.
  4. Gradually add the beef broth while whisking.
  5. Add Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper.

4. Simmer:

  1. Return patties to the skillet, cover with gravy, and reduce heat to low.
  2. Simmer for 15–20 minutes until fully cooked and gravy thickens.

Serving Suggestion

  • Serve hot with mashed potatoes, steamed rice, or noodles.
  • Garnish with fresh parsley if desired.

Tips

  • You can mix ground beef and pork for more flavor.
  • Add a splash of cream for a richer gravy if preferred.

Storage

  • Store covered in the fridge for up to 4 days.
  • Freeze with gravy for up to 2 months.
