alisbury steak is a classic American comfort food made from ground beef patties simmered in a rich onion and mushroom gravy. This one-skillet meal is perfect for a cozy family dinner and pairs beautifully with mashed potatoes, steamed vegetables, or white rice.
Ingredients
For the steaks:
- 1 lb (500 g) ground beef
- 1/4 cup breadcrumbs
- 1 egg
- 1 tbsp ketchup
- 1 tsp Dijon mustard
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- 1 garlic clove, minced
- 1/4 cup finely chopped onion
For the gravy:
- 1 tbsp olive oil or butter
- 1 large onion, thinly sliced
- 7 oz (200 g) fresh mushrooms, sliced
- 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions
1. Make the patties:
- In a large mixing bowl, combine ground beef, egg, breadcrumbs, ketchup, mustard, salt, pepper, garlic, and chopped onion.
- Mix well and form into 4 oval-shaped patties. Set aside.
2. Brown the patties:
- Heat a large skillet over medium heat and add a bit of oil or butter.
- Place the patties in the skillet and cook for 4–5 minutes per side, or until browned. Remove from skillet and set aside.
3. Make the gravy:
- In the same skillet, add a bit more oil if needed. Add the sliced onions and mushrooms. Cook for 5–6 minutes until softened.
- Stir in the flour and cook for 1 minute, stirring constantly.
- Gradually pour in the beef broth, stirring to remove any lumps.
- Add Worcestershire sauce and season with salt and pepper.
4. Combine and simmer:
- Return the patties to the skillet, spoon some gravy over the top.
- Reduce heat to low, cover partially, and simmer for 15 minutes, or until the meat is fully cooked and the gravy has thickened.
Serving Suggestions
Serve hot over mashed potatoes, rice, or alongside steamed vegetables. A light green salad makes a great addition too.
Tips:
- You can use a mix of beef and pork for extra flavor.
- For a lighter version, substitute with ground chicken or turkey and use low-fat broth.
