This traditional apple strudel recipe is a beloved family favorite passed down from my grandma. With its flaky pastry and sweet, spiced apple filling, it’s a delightful dessert that’s perfect for any occasion. Serve it warm with a dusting of powdered sugar or a scoop of vanilla ice cream for an extra treat!

Ingredients:

  • 4 large apples (such as Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), peeled, cored, and thinly sliced
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1/2 cup raisins (optional)
  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts or pecans (optional)
  • 1 package phyllo dough (about 16 oz), thawed
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • Powdered sugar for dusting

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Prepare the Filling: In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples, granulated sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg (if using), lemon juice, raisins, and nuts. Toss until the apples are well coated.
  3. Prepare the Phyllo Dough: Lay out one sheet of phyllo dough on a clean surface and brush it lightly with melted butter. Place another sheet on top and brush it again. Repeat this process until you have about 5-6 layers.
  4. Add the Filling: Spoon the apple mixture along one edge of the phyllo dough, leaving a border on the sides. Carefully roll the dough over the filling, tucking in the sides as you go to seal the strudel.
  5. Bake: Place the rolled strudel seam-side down on the prepared baking sheet. Brush the top with more melted butter. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until the pastry is golden brown and crisp.
  6. Cool and Serve: Allow the strudel to cool for a few minutes before slicing. Dust with powdered sugar before serving.

Enjoy this delicious apple strudel warm or at room temperature, and savor the comforting flavors that remind you of Grandma’s kitchen!
