Classic Salisbury steak is a hearty dish made with ground beef patties simmered in a rich onion and mushroom gravy. It’s comfort food at its best — simple, satisfying, and full of flavor.
Perfect for a cozy family dinner, especially when served over mashed potatoes or rice.
Ingredients
▪️ For the patties:
- 1 lb (500 g) ground beef
 - ¼ cup breadcrumbs
 - 1 egg
 - 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
 - ½ tsp salt
 - ¼ tsp black pepper
 - 1 tbsp finely chopped onion (or onion powder)
 
▪️ For the gravy:
- 2 tbsp butter or oil
 - 1 large onion, sliced
 - 1 cup sliced mushrooms
 - 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
 - 2 cups beef broth
 - 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
 - Salt and pepper to taste
 

Instructions
1. Make the patties:
- In a bowl, combine ground beef, egg, breadcrumbs, Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper, and onion.
 - Shape into 4–5 oval patties.
 
2. Cook the patties:
- Heat oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
 - Sear the patties for about 4–5 minutes per side, until browned. Remove and set aside.
 
3. Prepare the gravy:
- In the same skillet, sauté onions for 5 minutes.
 - Add mushrooms and cook for another 3–4 minutes.
 - Stir in the flour and cook for 1 minute.
 - Gradually add the beef broth while whisking.
 - Add Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper.
 
4. Simmer:
- Return patties to the skillet, cover with gravy, and reduce heat to low.
 - Simmer for 15–20 minutes until fully cooked and gravy thickens.
 
Serving Suggestion
- Serve hot with mashed potatoes, steamed rice, or noodles.
 - Garnish with fresh parsley if desired.

- You can mix ground beef and pork for more flavor.
 - Add a splash of cream for a richer gravy if preferred.
